But the majority of the conversation was around what they're likely to do with regard to AI. And given [the OpenELM news yesterday](https://www.macrumors.com/2024/04/24/apple-ai-open-source-models/?ref=spyglass.org), I think we nailed it. While it had been all quiet on the LLM front for quite some time, Apple's release of eight (!) models of varying sizes to the open source community [on Hugging Face](https://huggingface.co/apple/OpenELM?ref=spyglass.org) ([here's the white paper](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2404.14619?ref=spyglass.org)) would seem to [indicate](https://www.threads.net/@mgsiegler/post/C6J0GQVoORw?ref=spyglass.org) that this will be a big part of their approach to the space announced at WWDC in a few weeks. That is, Apple will focus their own AI efforts on things that can be done *on device*, while they will [perhaps outsource other AI elements](https://spyglass.org/google-ai-iphone/) in the cloud to third parties. It's a bit surprising that Apple released *now* as again, it would seem to telegraph their forthcoming moves, but this is also the way things are done in the AI community. And Apple has had to play ball in order to attract talent, if nothing else.[1](#footnote) As noted [by Emilia David at *The Verge*](https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/24/24139266/apple-ai-model-openelm-iphone-laptops-strategy?ref=spyglass.org): > In December, [Apple launched MLX](https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/6/23990678/apple-foundation-models-generative-ai-mlx?ref=spyglass.org), a machine learning framework that ideally makes it easier for AI models to run better on Apple Silicon. It also released [an image editing model called MGIE](https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/7/24065125/apple-generative-ai-image-editing-mgie-open-source-model?ref=spyglass.org), which lets people fix photos with prompts. Another model, Ferret-UI, [could be used to navigate smartphones](https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/9/24125707/apple-ai-paper-details-how-its-multi-modal-ferret-ui-llm-can-interpret-phone-uis?ref=spyglass.org). Apple is also rumored to be working on a [code completion tool similar to GitHub’s Copilot](https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/15/24074455/apple-generative-ai-xcode-spotlight-testing?ref=spyglass.org). [We've talked about Ferret before](https://spyglass.org/apple-ferret-ai/) (and Alex and I discussed on the pod), but there are likely to be [a range of things Apple will aim to do](https://spyglass.org/wwdc24-apple-ai/) on-device from an AI perspective.
