Despite being written on a whim, it quickly became the most popular post in the ([almost](https://spyglass.org/is-there-a-ghost-in-my-house/)) year-long history of *Spyglass*. Funny how that always seems to happen with writing: the throw-away post takes off. Though it's probably just a testament to the power of lists... Check your inbox to complete your signup. --- ### I Think... 🤼 [**Netflix Made Me Watch WWE** **— And It’s Betting $5 Billion You’ll Watch Too**](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/netflix-monday-night-raw-premiere-recap-1236103315/?ref=spyglass.org) – The streaming giant's latest foray into "sports" seems like a hit, at least after night one. Of course, they pulled out every stop, and celebrity, to hype this thing to no end. Naturally, The Rock returned, as did John Cena, as did Hulk Hogan hawking his own America First beer (social media seemed surprised at the level of boos – not booze – he received). A savvy opening, but will it have staying power and most importantly for the WWE, expand the audience, potentially pushing it global? For Netflix, can it be a form of glue that holds together [their clearly ramping sports streaming scaffolding](https://spyglass.org/netflix-nfl-streaming/)? Speaking of predictions: as I noted [a year ago](https://spyglass.org/raw-is-streaming-war/) when this partnership was announced: *"And so can the NFL games on Netflix really be that far behind?"* Narrator: [they were not](https://spyglass.org/netflix-football-league/) that far behind. \[**THR**\] **🇪🇺** [**We Do Not Censor Social Media, EU Says in Response to Meta**](https://www.reuters.com/technology/we-do-not-censor-social-media-eu-says-response-meta-2025-01-08/?ref=spyglass.org) – Mark Zuckerberg used [his content moderation pivot](https://spyglass.org/zuckerberg-speech-about-face-book/) speech to take a swipe at the EU for their [overzealous policies](https://spyglass.org/the-eu-clown-town/). The EU, of course, did not like this – in particular the assertion that Meta would work with the incoming Trump administration to [combat such actions](https://spyglass.org/tim-cook-donald-trump-apple-eu/). While this was clearly a broader and thinly-veiled threat to the EU [around regulation](https://spyglass.org/eu-to-meta-drop-dead/), the body chose just to respond to this element specifically, noting that Meta was welcome to use their new community moderation method in the EU, but that it would need to be "checked for effectiveness" – in other words, [we can expect](https://spyglass.org/spotify-meta-open-source-ai-dma/) these changes to Meta products to roll out in Europe around 2029\. [Or never](https://spyglass.org/eu-no-tech-zone/). \[**Reuters**\] **🫧** [**On Bubble Watch**](https://www.oaktreecapital.com/insights/memo/on-bubble-watch?ref=spyglass.org) – As always, a good overview from Howard Marks on where the market stands today, on the 25th anniversary of [his "bubble.com" memo](https://www.oaktreecapital.com/docs/default-source/memos/2000-01-02-bubble.pdf?sfvrsn=37bc0f65%5F2&ref=spyglass.org), no less. As he notes, since he's not a tech expert, it's hard for him to deduce if any of the "Magnificent 7" are overvalued, and by just how much – and, in a way, that's all that really matters because those stocks so utterly dominate the markets right now (roughly 1/3 of the S&P 500's *total* capitalization), in a way that's actually far beyond the way the top seven stocks dominated the market in that 2000 bubble (22%). But just these types of high level numbers point to quite a bit of bubble risk. Not insane, but a lot. And [any sort of slip](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-038-meta-miscues/#:~:text=An%20overview%20on,quarter%20in%202025...) could easily trigger a correction given the [concentration risk](https://spyglass.org/is-ai-spend-the-new-streaming-spend/) here alone. Regardless, a good level-setting and history lesson from Marks, especially now with so many in the workforce (and founding companies and *investing*) who were born *after* the Dot Com Bubble. Marks' lessons, of course, start well before that as he learned his first (the hard way) over 50 years ago. *Aside: bubble.com is now naturally* [*a startup*](https://bubble.io/blog/about-bubble/?ref=spyglass.org) *named* [*Bubble*](https://bubble.com/?ref=spyglass.org) *– "The full-stack, no-code app builder for everyone" (to be fair, they use the bubble.io domain, to which bubble.com redirects)*. \[**Oaktree**\] **⚖️** [**TikTok Supreme Court Case Pits National Security Against Free Speech**](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/09/us/politics/tiktok-supreme-court-national-security-free-speech.html?ref=spyglass.org) – With the Court set to hear the arguments for and against [banning TikTok](https://spyglass.org/ban-tiktok/) [starting](https://spyglass.org/tik-for-tok/) [tomorrow](https://spyglass.org/the-end-of-tiktok/) (ahead of the [January 19 ban date](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-034-a-new-social-media/#:~:text=Well%2C%20TikTok%20got%20their%20Supreme%20Court%20hearing%20%E2%80%93%20but%20much%20earlier%20than%20thought%2C%20on%20January%2010%2C%20ahead%20of%20their%20would%2Dbe%20January%2019%20ban%20date.%20Given%20the%20lower%20court%20rulings%2C%20this%20doesn%27t%20seem%20like%20particularly%20positive%20news.%20It%20may%20all%20come%20down%20to%20Trump%2C%20and%20a%20deal%2C%20which%20he%20must%20love.%20%5BCBS%20News%5D)), this is a summary of what it it likely to boil down to. The US will argue that a 2010 case which sided with national security set the precedent here. While TikTok will argue that a 1965 case that sided with free speech should be the precedent. One key: current Chief Justice John Roberts also presided over the 2010 case while now Justice Elena Kagan was the US Solicitor General at the time. That seemingly [does not bode well](https://spyglass.org/tiktok-vs-tiktok/) for TikTok here ([nor do lower court rulings](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-031-youtube-tv-makes-a-costly-mistake/#:~:text=%F0%9F%93%B5%20TikTok%20Loses,day%3F%20%5BFT%20%F0%9F%94%92%5D)). Nor does the push by many politicians, like Mitch McConnell who have seen a behind-closed-doors briefing of the security risks. But... you-know-who looms large here, [asking](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/27/us/politics/tiktok-ban-supreme-court-trump.html?smtyp=cur&smid=bsky-nytimes&ref=spyglass.org) the Court to give him time to [make a deal](https://spyglass.org/might-microsoft-make-another-run-at-tiktok/). Will this test [checks (books) and (bank) balances?](https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/09/us/politics/tiktok-supreme-court-national-security-free-speech.html?ref=spyglass.org) \[**NYT**\] --- ### I Note... - Speaking of TikTok, it sounds like **Eric Schmidt** and **Sebastian Thrun** are working on a potential alternative focused on **AI video generation**. At least in [trademark](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/?ref=spyglass.org#caseNumber=98746819&caseSearchType=US%5FAPPLICATION&caseType=DEFAULT&searchType=statusSearch) [submissions](https://tsdr.uspto.gov/?ref=spyglass.org#caseNumber=98746813&caseSearchType=US%5FAPPLICATION&caseType=DEFAULT&searchType=statusSearch), the name is '**Hooglee**', which sounds awfully Googley for two former Googlers... \[[**Forbes**](https://www.forbes.com/sites/sarahemerson/2025/01/09/eric-schmidts-new-secret-project-is-an-ai-video-platform-called-hooglee/?ref=spyglass.org) 🔒\] - As [expected](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-018/#:~:text=%F0%9F%8E%B2%20Inside%20Elon,.%20%5BWSJ%20%F0%9F%94%92%5D), **xAI's** stand-alone **Grok app** is here (at least in some countries). I was able to download it from [the US App Store](https://apps.apple.com/au/app/grok/id6670324846?ref=spyglass.org). And interestingly, it lets you sign in via Xitter or Apple... \[[**TechCrunch**](https://techcrunch.com/2025/01/08/xai-is-testing-a-standalone-ios-app-for-its-grok-chatbot/?ref=spyglass.org)\] - **Elon Musk** echoed the notion that we're now beyond ["**peak data**"](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-032-the-pe-playbook-for-america/#:~:text=%22We%E2%80%99ve%20achieved%20peak,finds%20a%20way...%22): *"We’ve now exhausted basically the cumulative sum of human knowledge …. in AI training. That happened basically last year."* The way forward in his view? Synthetic data, of course. Sure looks ([and sounds](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-035-on-to-25/#:~:text=%F0%9F%95%B9%EF%B8%8F%20The%20Nintendo,...%20%5BVerge%5D)) like it (in 3D printed form). Apparently, Amazon paid $40M for the rights, and that's *just to distribute it*, they won't own it. And there will be follow-up episodes! The publication agrees with the changes overall, [but like myself](https://spyglass.org/zuckerberg-speech-about-face-book/), bemoans the way it was *presented* – in particular, the timing, which was clearly and obviously politically motivated. --- ### I Spy... I see no problem with Bing's image creator (per above) – it's just as random, bland, and wonky as it was when I first tried it a couple years ago.
