Check your inbox to complete your signup. --- ### I Think... 🏈 [**Disney, Warner, and Fox Pull the Plug on Venu**](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/venu-sports-dead-streaming-service-pulled-before-launch-1236106145/?ref=spyglass.org) – While [the Hulu + Live TV/Fubo merger](https://spyglass.org/venu-vidi-vici-fubo/) was a new year shocker, arguably more surprising was that Disney and their partners were apparently *still pushing* to launch Venu, their [ill-timed](https://spyglass.org/disneys-has-a-lot-of-streaming-services/), [ill-conceived](https://spyglass.org/venu/), and ultimately ill-fated sports streaming service. But [as noted a few days ago](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-037-captain-america/#:~:text=Also%2C%20are%20we%20certain%20that%20Venu%27s%20legal/antitrust%20issues%20are%20over%3F%20NYT%20DealBook%20isn%27t%20as%20the%20Justice%20Department%20%28and%20others%29%20still%20may%20have%20something%20to%20say%20about%20the%20competitive%20nature%20of%20Venu.%20%5BNYT%5D), the end of the lawsuit didn't necessarily mean the end of their problems. And DirecTV and Dish made that crystal clear [yesterday](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/directv-dish-venu-launch-1236105328/?ref=spyglass.org), with their own threats of action against the service. Ultimately, it was probably around 10 headaches too many for Disney – who could have known, [except, well, everybody](https://spyglass.org/do-you-venu/) – and so now Venu is dead. [For real this time](https://spyglass.org/venu-rip/). Instead, you'll have to pick one of Disney's [600 other](https://spyglass.org/disney-streaming-bundle/) streaming content packages. \[**THR**\] **🗳️** [**Threads and Instagram Are For Politics Now**](https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/8/24339385/instagram-threads-politics-moderation-adam-mosseri?ref=spyglass.org) – One clear upside of [Meta's content-moderation changes](https://spyglass.org/zuckerberg-speech-about-face-book/): they're going to stop burying/downplaying real-time news and information. This is being framed around politics in particular, but given how vital that segment is to news/information in general, it's going to help [unclog the pipes](https://spyglass.org/real-time-threads/), as it were. IG head Adam Mosseri [clearly](https://www.threads.net/@mosseri/post/DEk65zdTVmX?xmt=AQGzRgkM9dO-oXrGzKG%5FuCgZjpS7aAUQkFbXPPZvGvWDxQ&ref=spyglass.org) feels a bit sheepish about the change (naturally, as he's been arguing against it for [months](https://spyglass.org/real-time-threads-meta/)), and the content control options still seem a bit complicated/unnecessary, but, baby steps. There will obviously be downsides to all of this as well – especially since they're making the change in lockstep with the moderation alterations – but this should help Threads become [a better Xitter competitor](https://spyglass.org/bluesky-is-twitters-heir-apparent/). \[**Verge**\] **💰** [**Elon Musk Calls on California and Delaware to Force Auction of OpenAI Stake**](https://www.ft.com/content/596dddb3-0607-44b9-b565-9c0d62e49b9f?ref=spyglass.org) – In the latest tactic to [try to derail](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-021/#:~:text=%E2%9A%96%EF%B8%8F%20Elon%20Musk,%5BTechCrunch%5D) (or at least delay) [the shift to a for-profit company](https://spyglass.org/openai-for-profit/), Musk's team is suggesting that the only way to get a truly fair value for the non-profit stake in OpenAI is to let the market determine the price. While this would certainly create "more chaos" as the *FT's* source puts it, it would also negate what OpenAI clearly views as the single most important talking point of the transition: that the non-profit remains a vital part of the story. Also fun: this would presumably allow Musk himself to bid on the stake! [I've tried to guesstimate](https://spyglass.org/the-war-of-the-ai-roses/) how I thought the equity might be carved up in the past. Total guess, but if the non-profit gets 25% of the equity, that would be worth nearly $40B at OpenAI's current $157B valuation. Presuming that valuation goes up over the next year, we're probably looking at **a "fair" price over $50B** (again, in my estimate). Also note the concern from the Musk team about Delaware overseeing this process, since that's also the state which has [blocked his Tesla pay package](https://news.sky.com/story/elon-musk-blocked-from-receiving-worlds-largest-pay-award-by-delawere-court-13265130?ref=spyglass.org). \[**FT** 🔒\] **📲** [**Apple Likely to Face Fiercer Challenges in 2025**](https://medium.com/@mingchikuo/apple-likely-to-face-fiercer-challenges-in-2025-requiring-caution-against-potential-downside-risks-5cec099e1d5d?ref=spyglass.org) – The latest report by Ming-Chi Kuo is awfully bearish on Apple's financial prospects for this year, specifically calling out weak iPhone demand. And while [the new 'iPhone Air'](https://spyglass.org/iphone-air-foldable-ibook/) should generate some buzz/interest, there's concern that it's mix of not being as "good" as the Pro lineup coupled with an undoubtedly higher price than the "regular" iPhones. It will be an interesting test of "new" – that is, just how much simply *a new design* still matters to the iPhone market. If the new design was coming to the high-end of the line – as was the case with the iPhone X back in the day – that would be far more straightforward. But personally, I don't want to "downgrade" to an 'iPhone Air' if it's not going to be as fast as the iPhone Pro models. And certainly not if the camera system isn't as good. And if battery life is a bit worse, etc. It's all speculation on a rumored product at this point, but those rumors also seem pretty aligned... A bigger problem for Apple may remain China, where iPhone demand seems even more off and the prospect of a tariff war and [the AI](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-017/#:~:text=%F0%9F%93%B1%20Apple%20Hits,!%29%20%5BFT%20%F0%9F%94%92%5D)/[SIM slot issues](https://spyglass.org/dispatch-017/#:~:text=%F0%9F%93%B2%20Apple%E2%80%99s%20Thin,asymmetrical.%20%5BInformation%20%F0%9F%94%92%5D) are sort of a perfect storm against [the iPhone company](https://spyglass.org/apples-amazing-iphone-problem/), it seems. Finally, Kuo shares [yet more signals](https://spyglass.org/iphone-16-ai-sales/) that AI is [doing](https://spyglass.org/aiphone-hold-the-ai/) nothing to [move these needles](https://spyglass.org/apple-slippery-intelligence/) [right now](https://spyglass.org/apple-ai-is-here-kinda/). All of this seemingly [adds](https://spyglass.org/pixel-fold-versus-iphone/) to pressure for [a foldable iPhone](https://spyglass.org/flip-iphone/) [in 2026](https://spyglass.org/foldable-iphone-ipad/)... \[**Medium**\] --- ### I Wrote... Also over the break, I both watched [and wrote about](https://spyglass.org/fly-me-to-the-moon-apple/) *Fly Me to the Moon*, which was a pretty big dud of a movie – enough to make me question Apple's taste when it comes to film.
