Charles Barkley [feels terrible](https://spyglass.org/charles-barkley-tnt-nba-streaming/) that TNT is set to the lose their NBA rights because of the fans. But, of course, once those rights are gone, he can take his talents elsewhere and the fans will follow. Like, say, [Amazon](https://spyglass.org/amazon-nba/). Which is not a part of Venu, but that [might actually be a good thing](https://spyglass.org/do-you-venu/).

In general, not a great week for celebrities, as they also saw their Meta-made AI chatbots [laid to rest after only a few months of life](https://spyglass.org/meta-ai-chatbots-slaughtered/). Perhaps they can take that ridiculous money pocketed from the (zero) effort and [buy up some movie theaters](https://spyglass.org/hollywood-stars-should-buy-movie-theaters/)? At the very least, [Robert Downey Jr. should](https://spyglass.org/doctor-doom-marvel-downey-jr/) after his upcoming [Doctor Doom payday](https://spyglass.org/robert-downey-jr-payday-doctor-doom/). It makes [*Deadpool vs. Wolverine* money](https://spyglass.org/deadpool-wolverine-box-office-win/) look like chump change.

Or maybe those celebs can take their transcendent artificial beings and port them into [a new AI companion pendant](https://spyglass.org/ai-friend-wearable/)? To quote Mark Zuckerberg, ["nah, fuck that."](https://spyglass.org/meta-open-ai/)

He said that in conversation with Jensen Huang, who has had his own [roller coaster of a week, stock-wise](https://spyglass.org/nvidia-stock-whiplash/). Of course, that's nothing new [for NVIDIA](https://spyglass.org/ai-divine-nvidia/). And that's going to continue in our AI frenzy as they're seemingly working with everyone – [except Apple](https://spyglass.org/apple-google-tpus-nvidia/). You know, the tortoise of AI [to Meta's Llama](https://spyglass.org/ai-meta-openai/). Apple just wants to [move slow and make sure everything works](https://spyglass.org/apple-ai-is-here-kinda/). Which seems... reasonable? Certainly [Wall Street seems to agree](https://spyglass.org/apple-q3-2024/), for now.

How much of the AI spend Microsoft that is bringing in is [coming from TikTok, or other Chinese-adjacent properties](https://spyglass.org/tiktokward/)? It seems like enough that they should be worried about it going away depends how the political winds shift...

[Xitter killed Twitter for Mac](https://spyglass.org/dead-again-twitter-for-mac/). Yes, again. Yes, it was still alive. [Perhaps it's time to kill Xitter?](https://spyglass.org/a-time-to-kill-twitter/) With [a lightsaber](https://spyglass.org/the-acolyte-mostly-sucked/), perhaps?

### Remains of the Week

**🍎** [**Apple's Q3 2024 Earnings Call**](https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/08/this-is-tim-q3-2024-analyst-call-transcript/?ref=spyglass.org) – Jason Snell always does a great job with getting these full transcripts up, and an even better job [with the charts](https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/08/apple-results-quarterly-record-all-time-high-in-services/?ref=spyglass.org)! This was a pretty boring earnings call, IMO. There's always the usual Apple spin to try to make it seem that [even mundane quarters](https://spyglass.org/apple-q3-2024/) are amazing – but the analysts asking questions this cycle really sort of crapped the bed, including one asking if there would be a staggered roll-out of AI features, which literally every other person on the planet [knows the answer to](https://spyglass.org/apple-ai-is-here-kinda/) because Apple has said as much many times. It was interesting that basically every question was about AI or China and there were none about Vision Pro. *Zero*. Even though it just [launched](https://spyglass.org/anemic-vision-pro-sales/) outside of the US for the first time in the quarter. [Yikes](https://spyglass.org/vision-pro-launch-disaster/). *\[Six Colors\]*

**📺** [**Venu Has a Tough Marketing Challenge to Find an Audience**](https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/01/venu-sports-challenge-to-find-an-audience.html?ref=spyglass.org) – Alex Sherman says the new sports streaming service is going to have to call in Don Draper, pronto. He brings up a number of good points about Venu ([here are my own](https://spyglass.org/do-you-venu/)) – namely that SlingTV is already in market with a similar offering, and actually a better one because it includes NBC (and a host of other non-sports channels) for just a bit more money. And after some momentum out of the gate (in the earlier days of virtual television packages) it has stopped growing... So yeah, Disney is going to have to market this like crazy. *\[CNBC\]*

**🏀** [**How Zaz Lost the NBA**](https://puck.news/how-tnt-david-zaslav-lost-the-nba/?ref=spyglass.org) – Great, full tick-tock from John Ourand as to just how David Zaslav gambled, bungled, and [ultimately lost the NBA rights](https://spyglass.org/nba-amazon-tnt/) for Warner Bros Discovery and, [critically, TNT](https://spyglass.org/charles-barkley-tnt-nba-streaming/). Well, unless he can sue to get them back, which seems problematic at best. To be fair to WBD, it does seem like the NBA was driving a hard bargain, but Zaslav clearly [misjudged](https://spyglass.org/ill-sue-you-to-show-i-love-you/) the market for the rights. *\[Puck 🔒\]*

**🤺** [**Microsoft Says OpenAI is Now a Competitor**](https://www.cnbc.com/2024/07/31/microsoft-says-openai-is-now-a-competitor-in-ai-and-search.html?ref=spyglass.org) – They added the company in which they've invested some $13B to this category in [their latest 10-K filing](https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/789019/000095017024087843/msft-20240630.htm&ref=spyglass.org). Microsoft, of course, says "nothing to see here", but well, there wasn't anything to see before, now there is literally something to see! Yes, yes, SearchGPT, but still! If nothing else, it just continues the trend of awkwardness [if not outright tension](https://spyglass.org/openai-microsoft-ai/) here. At least Microsoft is [no longer in board room, I guess](https://spyglass.org/openai-board-apple-microsoft/)? *\[CNBC\]*

**🌪️** [**Hollywood’s Message to Red States: Our Movies Are for You**](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/28/business/media/hollywood-movies-red-state-audiences.html?ref=spyglass.org) – It does feel like *Twisters*, a movie about a certain type of natural disaster which sure [seems to](https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2023/04/02/tornadoes-climate-change/?ref=spyglass.org) be [occurring more regularly](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/08/climate/tornadoes-cluster-climate-change.html?ref=spyglass.org) and [with greater force](https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240522-climate-change-experts-advise-how-to-prepare-for-a-tornado?ref=spyglass.org#:~:text=Due%20to%20climate%20change%2C%20tornado,hit%20the%20US%20every%20year.), would carry with it a message about climate change. Nope. [Republicans buy sneakers too](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/may/04/michael-jordan-espn-last-dance-republicans-sneakers-quote-nba?ref=spyglass.org), after all. But really, this would seem to be a backlash against escapist entertainment being "too preachy" which I think is generally okay. Not everything needs to be a statement. *\[NYT\]*

### Potent Quotables

> "The mark of a good C.E.O. is not how many punches you can throw, but how many you can take. She is the Muhammad Ali of C.E.O.s."

\-- **Ari Emanuel**, CEO of Endeavor, [talking about Linda Yaccarino](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/27/technology/linda-yaccarino-x-ceo-elon-musk.html?ref=spyglass.org), who got not one, but [*two* different feature articles](https://www.wsj.com/tech/linda-yaccarino-elon-musk-x-power-divide-cbc8b6d8?ref=spyglass.org) in two different publications this week detailing her struggles to run Xitter under Elon Musk

### The Quick & the Read

- It sure seems like Apple is gearing up to launch ads within Apple TV+ \[[**The Telegraph**](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/07/27/apple-tv-plots-uk-adverts/?ref=spyglass.org)\]
- OpenAI has [finally](https://spyglass.org/its-all-about-the-o/) started rolling out their new voice capabilities within ChatGPT's mobile app – no ['Sky/Scarlett' voice](https://spyglass.org/scarlett-letters/) though \[[**TechCrunch**](https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/30/openai-releases-chatgpts-super-realistic-voice-feature/?ref=spyglass.org)\]
- Bennett Miller – director of *Capote*, *Moneyball*, and *Foxcatcher* fame – is finally gearing up for his next movie after a decade away. The topic: AI – yes, really \[[**World of Reel**](https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2024/7/30/2lvaunarb79jn4826lwicaydg8fl88?ref=spyglass.org)\]
- Former Cisco CEO John Chambers joined the board of Humane, which seems all kinds of weird unless a deal is about to go down of some sort... \[[**The Information**](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/embattled-wearable-ai-startup-humane-says-ex-cisco-ceo-to-join-its-board?rc=lsmcir&ref=spyglass.org) 🔒\]
- I had no idea there were two versions of the Super Nintendo system (and I'm not talking about the [remodeled](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super%5FNintendo%5FEntertainment%5FSystem?ref=spyglass.org#/media/File:SNES-Model-2-Set.jpg) version) back in the day, but one apparently had much better graphic output – not that we could tell on our old CRT TVs, but it's pretty easy to see on modern TVs – this chip fixes it if you happen to have one \[[**The Verge**](https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/29/24208741/super-nintendo-upgrade-voultar-edge-enhancer-mod?ref=spyglass.org)\]
- Amazon has hired Scott Stuber, the former head of Netflix's film division, to reboot the United Artists banner, which they got as part of the MGM buy. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with its actual origins as an actual artists-centric studio ([started by Charlie Chaplin and co](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United%5FArtists?ref=spyglass.org)), just branding \[[**Variety**](https://variety.com/2024/film/news/amazon-mgm-studios-netflix-film-chief-scott-stuber-united-artists-1236086388/?ref=spyglass.org)\]
- Did you know that your AI boyfriend/girlfriend may be from China? \[[**WSJ**](https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/one-of-americas-hottest-entertainment-apps-is-chinese-owned-04257355?ref=spyglass.org) 🔒\]
  - Could be worse though, they could be hoovering up your views on gun control, abortion, religion, etc. OR MAYBE THEY ARE \[[**WSJ**](https://www.wsj.com/tech/tiktok-collected-u-s-users-views-on-gun-control-abortion-and-religion-u-s-says-4fcf19f6?ref=spyglass.org) 🔒\]
- The US Commerce Department has endorsed "open weight" AI models, which is obviously [great news for Meta](https://spyglass.org/zuckerberg-llama-open-source-ai/) and not great news for others like OpenAI, Google, and the like... \[[**TechCrunch**](https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/29/u-s-commerce-department-report-endorses-open-ai-models/?ref=spyglass.org)\]
- Did you see the offer "Apex Capital" made to buy Paramount – notable because it's within the 45-day "go shop" period of the Skydance offer? Turns out, it may have been a hoax because [this story](https://spyglass.org/skydance-paramount-part-ii/) needs more twists and turns. \[[**The Wrap**](https://www.thewrap.com/apex-capital-trust-paramount-competing-bid-skydance/?ref=spyglass.org)\]
  - Edgar Bronfman Jr. is still actually trying to put together a competing offer though, it seems – he has 19 days \[[**Axios**](https://www.axios.com/2024/07/30/bronfman-still-eyeing-paramount-deal?ref=spyglass.org)\]
- Intel is going to cut 15,000 jobs (and its dividend) in the continued effort [to turn itself around](https://spyglass.org/intel-outside/). Yikes. \[[**NYT**](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/01/technology/intel-layoffs-quarterly-report.html?ref=spyglass.org)\]
- Mark Zuckerberg casually dropped the notion that Llama 4 will need about *10x* the compute resources to train versus what the [just-released Llama 3.1](https://spyglass.org/meta-llama-ai-zuckerberg-open-ai/) version needed. [Yikes](https://spyglass.org/is-ai-spend-the-new-streaming-spend/). \[[**The Verge**](https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/31/24210786/meta-earnings-q2-2024-ai-llama-zuckerberg?ref=spyglass.org)\]
  - Alex Heath also casually the notion that Meta will release a cheaper version of the Quest headset next month at their Connect conference...
- Meanwhile, others are coming for [OpenAI's "Strawberry" pickings](https://spyglass.org/openai-strawberry-fields-forever/) fast, it seems. Sorry, that is AI that can "reason". \[[**The Information**](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/how-openais-smaller-rivals-are-developing-their-own-ai-that-reasons?rc=lsmcir&ref=spyglass.org) 🔒\]

### One More Quote...

> "Probably the most fragile platform. When was the last time you heard of a big outage at Apple?"

\-- **Ed Bastian**, the CEO of Delta Air Lines when asked about [the company's relationship with Microsoft](https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/1/24210680/crowdstrike-microsoft-outage-delta-lawsuit-class-action-damages?ref=spyglass.org) (and Windows) after the massive computer outage – which, yes, was [caused by CrowdStrike](https://spyglass.org/eu-blue-screen-of-death/). Harsh!
