The new iPhone is here! And, well, [mine is still transferring](https://spyglass.org/iphone-transfer-takes-forever/) – no joke – f*ive hours later, with seemingly another six hours to go*. Pure insanity. As if Apple [didn't have enough issues](https://spyglass.org/iphone-16-ai-sales/) trying to get people to buy this year's model with the key touted feature not yet released... I think Apple needs to [self-reflect a bit](https://spyglass.org/over-oiled-apple/) after the latest iPhone event. Maybe look at what Snap is doing – even if [their products aren't quite up to Apple standards](https://spyglass.org/snap-ar-glasses/), at least [*the presentation was*](https://spyglass.org/snap-spectacles/).

On a more positive note for Apple, Margrethe Vestager will be gone soon enough – but until then, [the heat remains on](https://spyglass.org/vestagers-eu-apple/). As it does on Intel ([from all sides](https://spyglass.org/intel-under-assault/)), but at least [they finally answered at least some of it](https://spyglass.org/intel-strikes-deals/). As did Nike, with a CEO change – [seemingly for the best](https://spyglass.org/just-do-it/).

Could be worse. Could be fraud. [Like MoviePass back in the day](https://spyglass.org/moviepass-fraud/). Or, you know, [new shitcoins](https://spyglass.org/the-grift-that-keeps-giving/). Someone call [AI John Wick](https://spyglass.org/john-wick-ai/), pronto.

### Some Analysis...

[The Article that Explains the Nike OusterUltimately, John Donahoe failed to ‘just do it’…![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/ca/afcaa655-46e2-45b8-889a-2881de5cce69/content/images/size/w256h256/2024/09/UMspy.png)SpyglassM.G. ### Some Ranting...

[The iPhone Transfer Pain BoxWhy is it still \*so\* hard to transfer to a new iPhone after all these years?![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/af/ca/afcaa655-46e2-45b8-889a-2881de5cce69/content/images/size/w256h256/2024/09/UMspy.png)SpyglassM.G. ### Some Thoughts...

**🦾** [**OpenAI's Miniature Reasoning Model is Mighty**](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/openais-miniature-reasoning-model-is-mighty-and-affordable?rc=lsmcir&ref=spyglass.org) – The building theme here is that not only is the 'o1-mini' model good, it may actually be *better* at many tasks than the larger 'o1-preview' ([they really need help with that branding](https://spyglass.org/strawberry-openai-o1/)). If true, beyond [the reasoning breakthrough](https://spyglass.org/openai-strawberry-fields-forever/), this could fundamentally alter the AI model [arms race](https://spyglass.org/apple-intelligence-ai-arms-race/) and thus, [the space](https://spyglass.org/ai-hype/). \[*The Information* 🔒\]

🍪 [**China’s AI Firms Are Cleverly Innovating Around Chip Bans**](https://www.economist.com/science-and-technology/2024/09/19/chinas-ai-firms-are-cleverly-innovating-around-chip-bans?ref=spyglass.org) – Along the lines of the above, with the advanced AI chip bans in place, these Chinese firms have figured out clever ways for how to still compete in the AI race. And it also feels like these "hacks" could lead to their own breakthroughs in the space. \[*The Economist* 🔒\]

**🪪** [**iPhone Driver's License Support Expands to California**](https://www.macrumors.com/2024/09/19/iphone-drivers-license-wallet-app-california/?ref=spyglass.org) – Given Apple's relationship with the state – see: [the name of macOS versions](https://www.threads.net/@mwichary/post/DAAPQiWNs%5FZ?ref=spyglass.org) – you'd think the state would have been the *first* to add this, but as with all things California, it has taken time – two years, in fact. Also worth noting that you still need to carry your physical ID for most things you previously needed it for, this will just help at *some* airports with the TSA – notably, SFO ([new logo and all](https://spyglass.org/sfo-logo/)) is on [the list](https://www.afar.com/magazine/apples-new-tsa-approved-id-coming-to-numerous-us-airports?ref=spyglass.org) but [the San Francisco Bay Area Airport of Oakland or whatever the fuck](https://spyglass.org/whopper-of-a-week/#:~:text=I%27m%20shocked%2C%20shocked%20that%20some%20passengers%20are%20showing%20up%20at%20San%20Francisco%20Bay%20Oakland%20International%20Airport%20thinking%20they%27re%20showing%20up%20at%20San%20Francisco%20International%20Airport%20or%20vice%20versa.%20How%20could%20anyone%20possibly%20be%20confused%20by%20that%3F%20At%20least%20SFO%20has%20the%20better%20logo.%20%5BSFist%5D), isn't. \[*MacRumors*\]

**⚾️** [**Breaking Down Shohei Ohtani's Historic 50/50 Season**](https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/%5F/id/41327555/mlb-2024-shohei-ohtani-50-50-season-breakdown-history?ref=spyglass.org) – The stats for the season are just bonkers – remember, this is a player *who pitches too* (though he's not currently as he recovers from Tommy John surgery). But still, the way in which he crossed the milestone is even more bonkers: a 6-for-6 night *including 3 homeruns* and 2 stolen bases to go along with 10 RBIs on the night. Starting to think this guy [may be worth $700M](https://www.sportico.com/personalities/athletes/2023/shohei-ohtani-dodgers-contract-details-700-1234757983/?ref=spyglass.org)... \[*ESPN*\]

**❄️** [**Disney Animation Boss Steps Down to Focus on ‘Frozen’ Sequels**](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/19/business/jennifer-lee-disney-animation-frozen.html?ref=spyglass.org) – While my children will appreciate the move to focus more on *Frozen* – how on Earth is the third film not coming *for another 3 years (*8 years after the second and 14 years after the original)?! – it's a little strange to me that Disney is shaking up the animation division before Lucasfilm, which [seems](https://spyglass.org/the-acolyte-mostly-sucked/) much more [problematic](https://spyglass.org/the-acolyte-disney-plus-awful/) and has [for a while](https://500ish.com/the-retcon-of-the-jedi-33a8088216a6?ref=spyglass.org) under Kathleen Kennedy. Also sort of wild that Jennifer Lee took over Disney Animation from John Lasseter only a few years after she broke in at Disney. But I guess that was a bit of [an extenuating circumstance](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/john-lasseters-pattern-alleged-misconduct-detailed-by-disney-pixar-insiders-1059594/?ref=spyglass.org)... Jared Bush, best known for *Encanto* and *Moana* now takes over (Pete Doctor still runs Pixar post-Lasseter). \[*NYT*\]

### Some Quotes...

> "Be a hand-raiser, not a finger-pointer."

\-- **Elliot Hill**, the incoming new CEO of Nike, [in a video he made for the company](https://players.brightcove.net/6163289603001/default%5Fdefault/index.html?videoId=6362181329112&ref=spyglass.org) answering some questions about his history with Nike (starting as an intern!) and return. It's a nice video, clearly this guy lives and breathes Nike.

> “I don’t think there are going to be 20 foundation model companies, certainly not unless costs come down. You either win or you fade into obscurity and become MySpace.”

\-- **An anonymous investor in OpenAI**, [talking to *The Financial Times*](https://www.ft.com/content/a8f9bd05-0999-415d-af86-c73e79ad5733?ref=spyglass.org) about the latest funding round – [which *sounds*](https://www.theinformation.com/articles/openai-asks-investors-to-fork-over-250-million?stream=top&rc=lsmcir&ref=spyglass.org) like it's [just about wrapped up at north of $6B](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-19/openai-to-decide-which-backers-to-let-into-6-5-billion-funding?ref=spyglass.org), which probably not coincidentally would put it just ahead of xAI as the largest non-corporate/strategic [round ever raised](https://www.axios.com/2024/09/20/openai-largest-vc-round?ref=spyglass.org) (though, of course, most of the capital [is coming from Apple](https://spyglass.org/apple-openai-investment/), NVIDIA, and Microsoft, [to recycle](https://spyglass.org/follow-the-nvidia-chips/) amongst themselves [it seems](https://spyglass.org/apple-openai-investment-chatgpt/)).

Also perhaps not coincidentally, it sounds like Sequoia and a16z are *not* participating in this round after they participated in the xAI round (not to mention Ilya Sutskever's new ['OpenAI Original'](https://spyglass.org/safe-superintelligence-openai/), Safe Superintelligence's [$1B "seed" round](https://spyglass.org/bears-of-seasons/#:~:text=%F0%9F%92%B0%20Safe%20Superintelligence,here...%20%5BReuters%5D)).

No conflict, no interest, indeed.
