While it has been 20 years since I've used Windows regularly,[1](#footnote) [I've been saying](https://spyglass.org/windows-ai/) some nice things about it recently, as Microsoft [apparently](https://spyglass.org/microsoft-windows-ai-surface/) gears up to reorient the software around AI in a way that I think could make a lot of sense and potentially reinvigorate the operating system. I take it all back.

1 As Warren notes, this isn't exactly new for Microsoft, but it's nonetheless awful. We're already inundated with ads [everywhere](https://500ish.com/what-a-great-reading-experience-702a14abe5b0?ref=spyglass.org), for [everything](https://500ish.com/make-the-tv-commercials-stop-96e6711183aa?ref=spyglass.org), can we please keep our computer homescreens sacred? Could you imagine if Apple gave one app slot on the iOS homescreen to an ad? I say that, but I'm mildly afraid that if Apple [can't find](https://spyglass.org/apple-antitrust-fight/) the next revenue driver, [they might try it too](https://mgs.blog/apple-to-start-injecting-more-ads-into-your-iphone-c47339eec09a?ref=spyglass.org)...
