A Call to AI

Shopify goes all-in on AI – other companies are sure to follow...
A Call to AI

Given how many people sent me a link to Tobi Lutke's tweet about the use of AI within Shopify, it's no wonder that he chose to publish his memo publicly (because it was leaking): such a post is clearly touching nerves. And those nerves are quite exposed at the moment because everyone is thinking about and talking about AI as it relates to the future of, well, everything. But in particular, work. And as Lutke's memo makes crystal clear: he believes that AI won't just be a part of the work going forward at Shopify, it will be vital. And it's time to get on board, now.

It's a good post because it succinctly summarizes a debate being had within a lot of companies at the moment. But most, beyond those that actually work directly in AI, are seemingly taking more of a wait-and-see approach. That's understandable, it's still the early days of AI. But with each passing day, it's becoming less of those "early days" and at some point, you have to make a call on how your business will operate going forward. This is Lutke making that call.
