By far the most surprising thing about a new paper by Apple's Machine Learning Research group is that they put it out there at all. Because it sure feels like 'ELEGNT' may point directly to Apple's next big product, and series of products. Yes, Apple's early explorations into robotics looks a lot like the company we all know and love.
Specifically, a few weeks ago, Apple's team published their work entitled "ELEGNT: Expressive and Functional Movement Design for Non-anthropomorphic Robot" on the arXiv area of Cornell University's website. Apple's AI teams have been known to publish here in the past, but this time they also highlighted the work on Apple's own machine learning sub-site. This is obviously a big part of AI research, the desire to publish, and so even though it may run against Apple's historically secretive norms, it makes sense. But I'm still surprised that the team was also allowed to publish a video further highlighting their work and breakthroughs. Research papers, while exciting to some, are too obtuse for most. But a video... I mean, just watch it. It's awesome.
